“Powerful Music with Purposeful Stares”
-5 Word Movie Reviews
Watch Date: 24 January 2019
Runtime: 02:23
The Reason:
After a brief introduction to Arthur Curry’s early life, the movie opens with the now fully grown and aptly dubbed “Aquaman” assaulting, and saving the crew of, a submarine that has recently been boarded by sea pirates. This scene alone has at least three moments of a person getting knocked back, down or around only the music to crescendo in time with them turning around and giving a “you just fucked with the wrong person” look to the camera. This sets the tone for the movie and literally every major scene from then on is defined by a similar moment.
The Runner-Ups:
“Different Atlantis, same Ronin Dex”
– 5 Word Movie Reviews
I almost went with this as my 5-word review because, while Jason Momoa has come a long way since his days in the Stargate Universe, he still adds very little in the way of emotion or character to his roles. What he does bring to the movie, I believe he does very well, but when your leading actor isn’t bringing emotion or character to the screen, someone else needs to and this movie just didn’t have it.
“DC, but with bright colours”
– 5 Word Movie Reviews
The DC Universe is yet to get the formula right in this latest iteration of their many, many reboots. Past instalments in the universe have been filled with drab colours, characters that are eternally moping and generally a feeling that regardless of who “wins” this thing no one is going to be happy at the end. This movie goes a little bit of the way to moving in the right direction. While at times it is still melancholic and drab, the entrance scenes to Atlantis as well as the rest of our immersion into this long-lost global society is filled with vibrant colours, rich background characters and a feeling that there actually is some lost history here worth finding.
The Final Thoughts:
Aquaman is the latest instalment in the DC Universe. For a fan base that has put up with decades after decades of re-runs, reboots and reimaginations of largely the same two superheroes (Batman & Superman) it is great to see the universe expanding. The recent releases of Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Justice League and now Aquaman are all steps in the right direction. However, I feel that they are still missing the mark and failing to capitalise on what must be the golden age for comic-book movies. This movie was a step in the right directiong, and I believe the best of this lot, but was ultimately letdown by bad choreography, hap-hazard chronology and a storyline that seemed rushed. Ultimately, I feel that they could have benefited from not trying to jam the entire Aquaman mythology into one movie, thereby freeing up more time to lay the story out in a more chronological fashion.
